Replacement Of Hot Water Heater On Island Packet 38

I have an Island Packet 38 (1999) and need to replace the hot water heater. It appears that the new ones are slightly larger. What are my options aside from enlarging the platform? Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Measure the hole it has to go through and the platform it sits on and buy one to fit.
Let me know which one you pick as mine is original from 1987 so it has to be about ready to go..
It looked like replacement was going to be easy, good access and all.
I think we have 12 gl ones now?

Post your measurements and maybe we can get Hopcar to find one that fits.

Why would you need to heat hot water?

Seriously, measure the space you have and buy a new one that fits that space. The easiest install will be an exact replacement from the company that made the original. If that's not possible, find one with the water connections in a similar location.

I recommend you do a "google custom search" on the site to find threads relating to water heaters, calorifiers if you will. There are a few threads with recommendations of what to buy and what not to buy. The reference to Hop Car is a good one. Maybe a PM to him?

I have replaced the water heater on both an IP 37 and an IP 420. The Seaward, rectangular heaters are exactly the same size as what you have and there should be no problem with the replacement.

Unless the heater was installed before the engine or deck.

No, there is a large access cover in the aft Stateroom that they will easily fit through, (I have measured) and if necessary, this cover could be enlarged.
I believe though that this access hole is the limiting factor size wise on water heater, I have not measured but there seemed to be plenty of room on my boat where it's mounted.

The worst to replace was the IP 37- where the water heater is behind the aft cabin through a small access hole which JUST ALLOWS you to get the heater in and out without having to enlarge it. But having a trained orangutan on hand would have been very helpful. I don't know where it is located in the 38.

Sounds like the same place as a 37.
On a 38 you can get to it from the other side as well, there is room for you to fit, I would assume ideal would be two people, but believe one can do it.
I think it's a 12 gl heater? Do you remember?

Why do you even need a device that heats hot water?
