Re: Replacing 25 year old sanitation hoses

[QUOTE=peghall;3918235]That will depend on the quality of the hose you buy. Raritan SaniFlex RaritanSaniFlex hose is the top rated hose...expensive, but worth it because it has a 10 yr warranty against odor permeation and has the added advantage of being so flexible it can be bent almost as tight as a hairpin without kinking, which makes most re-hosing jobs a LOT easier./QUOTE]

Once you have used that hose you would need to be the be an insane super cheap DIYer to use anything else!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Replacing 25 year old sanitation hoses

Did the same job. Found a can of expanding spray foam useful to block end of old hose until I could get it out. Kept smell etc down. Also I ended up joining new and old hose together with some twine and using the old hose to pull the new through one of the longer routes that I could not get to easily. Worked well There was one hidden area that I just could not get old hose removed even when I had one of my sheet winches connected to one end pulling. Ended up actually leaving that 6 foot piece in place sealed at both ends after drying with a heat gun. Sealed with the foam. It worked with no odor.

and lots of heavy-duty garbage bags for the old hoses as they come out and apart.

Bookmarked.

Thanks in advance for all the info on a job that I'm trying to ignore but know is coming in the next couple of years.

Re: Replacing 25 year old sanitation hoses

Well, it was an awful job, but it's done except for button-up. I'm going to have to make a new sole for the lazarette and get some suitable cushion clamps for a few spots. A few facts and observations for all of you:

  • I used about 25 feet of Raritan sani-flex. I measured carefully and added 2 feet to each of three sections to be sure I would had enough, and had ordered... 31 feet. Glad I didn't run out, and I'll sell or figure out something to do with the rest.
  • Raritan sani-flex is sold wholesale in 10 foot sticks and 50 foot rolls. My local yard only ever bought it in 10 foot sticks and was surprised I was able to get a large piece in one length. Keep this in mind if you shop around as the 10 foot sticks will result in splices and waste.
  • Saliva does make a reasonably effective substitute for K-Y when installing the new hoses on fittings.
  • Some of the 25 year old hose was impossible to get loose without cutting the reinforcing wire with a die grinder. It took a steady hand to avoid nicking the fittings and there were sparks but it was quick and easy. I believe the old rubber had swollen and expanded underneath the wire making it more or less impossible to remove.
  • I used Vetus 5/8" sanitation hose for the vent line. It was slightly too large and had to be clamped down a considerable amount to stay on the fittings.
  • I was unable to bag up the old hoses for disposal because they were not flexible enough to coil. Instead I put them on the roof of my car and drove over to the marina dumpster.
I had a Milwaukee M18 battery powered fan down in the laz with me which made the difference between an awful job and an impossible one especially as it was a hot day.

I found that the hard part was not so much the stink but the amount of muscle it took to get the hoses off and on again in the extremely tight quarters.

Yes, glad you were able to experience the "features" of hose with wire in it.
That's why I so detest that wicked stuff, (and have posted as such,) with most of a working career being paid to do boat work, I've used 100s of feet of the stuff in all sizes.
Given a "say in the matter" I'll only use it when nothing else will work.
I long ago found out that industrial hose suppliers have many choices of product that will eliminate most any need for wire, (and do it cheaper than the "marine product" stuff).

Re: Replacing 25 year old sanitation hoses

I'm using K-Y jelly, as it is glycerin based and has good compatibility with rubber, and is readily available and inexpensive.

You forgot to include that KY is water soluble so it doesn't leave you with permanently slippery hose connections.
