Re: Toilet paper questions

In most cases, an oversized wad of quick-dissolve TP stuck in the toilet pump or discharge will dissolve on its own. So instead of immediately jumping in to remove the clog, try waiting an hour to see if it'll clear itself.

Sure there are. They are the flushable ones and they break apart pretty much the same as TP. Been doing over a year with not problems.

Re: Toilet paper questions

I've never heard of any. Do you have brand name...maybe a photo of the label?

They all say "flushable" on the label, but they're doing so much damage to municipal sewer systems worldwide that I don't know why that's still legal. The problem with 'em is, they don't shred. Perhaps someone else will chime in with their tale of having to disentangle one from a macerator blade.

Here are a couple links to reports of the damage they do;
https://www.lexingtonma.gov/water-an...-sewer-systems

https://www.globalwatergroup.com.au/...eatment-plants

You'll find at least a dozen more if you just google wet wipes damage to sewer systems."

Re: Toilet paper questions

We have sailed since we developed eyes, closing in on 55 years now. Sailed all major ocean’s, in all weather (in a Bavaria). Almost never been ashore, and we have always used the small seat Jabsco for all our sh.. disposal, even cardboard boxes, old charts and tin cans goes trough. NEVER CLOGGED EVER, BELIEVE ME! You can pretty much jam anything in that bulletproof marine toilet, it’s like a manual trash compactor made of titanium. Did I mention that I am a certified urologist and a master mariner, and currently reading to be an astronaut with SpaceX. No s*h*i*t*.

Re: Toilet paper questions

I am not going to battle the guru, but they don't all say flushable. People should test them just like they would TP. I have used more than one brand and they will tear up with butt use just like TP.

Re: Toilet paper questions

99% of places in Greece you NEVER put TP down the toilet; you must use the ever-present TP can beside toilet (ok, I have not actually been to 99-100% in Greece).

Since you asked:
Each to their own: TP never, ever, goes down our boat's head. Basket under sink.

Re: Toilet paper questions

we're with highside et al

full time live aboards and never had any problems with T/P blocking our macerators.

no way we'd live with a situation where used t/p didn't go straight into the bowl where it belongs

cheers,

Re: Toilet paper questions

Some form of bidet can help reduce the TP need, rather you're in the bag or flush camp. For those in the bag camp it should also mean far fewer fecal bits in there.

Re: Toilet paper questions

The problem of reading science and biology stuff on the web every day is that I actually read a real science paper that found most people carry around a measurable amount of material which has passed through their digestive system and remains on their skin. Therefore I fully understand why manatees who produce a significant volume of biscuits each day, make grimacing faces as they pass by yachts.

Our electric macerating heads would chop pencils, map books, martini glasses, whatever. Just anything but cloth or strings.

So we used the same "premium" (?) paper products we have at home.

Try whatever you feel like.

You'll need to give a brand. By and large, flushable wipes are wet wipes, and if they would fall apart wet, they would have fallen apart in the box.

People want to know. Otherwise....

As for Peggie's statements, yup, all true. Test the paper first. If there is a clog, wait a while. And there is no reason people can't use any amount... if they flush in stages. Sometimes things get messy. Just explain that to them. Your guests don't want clogs either; it's embarassing.

Re: Toilet paper questions

nope, not taking the bait and don't feel like getting up and taking a picture just so more non believers/users can just say they wouldn't work even though I already posted from over a year's worth of liveaboard experience that they are just fine in the system

Re: Toilet paper questions

If the boat is older than 10 years old, change out the sanitation lines. Flush TP all you want.
