Re: Water pump will not turn off

Water pumps are not expensive. Before doing anything else I would isolate the problem as a pump issue not a small pressure leak downstream. Make a block with a piece of hose and a solid fitting and clamp it onto the pump outflow. Then turn on the pump. If you get cycling you can be sure it is a pump issue and can decide whether to play with it or just replace. Professional repair will probably not be cost effective. On the other hand, if the cycling stops you have a pressure leak and can begin the fun job of tracking it down. Option 3 is just live with it and get used to running the pump only when needed controlling it with the circuit breaker.

Re: Water pump will not turn off

Thank you. I have tried replacing the pressure switch, stripping the pump and trying another that is known to be working!!! Ugh. May try option 3 for the time being.

Re: Water pump will not turn off

Thank you for all your help and advice. Having not used the forum much in the past I am really impressed with the level of support. Anyway, back to the drawing board and try to track the cause when I have recovered from all previous attempts. Cheers

Re: Water pump will not turn off

Check the pressure diagram. The pressure diagram can be the reason. It can cause if the pump has an air lock in the pump. Our pump doesn’t turn off when it has air lock inside it. The debris present in the discharge valve build pressure and make the situation worse. Clean the pressure switch properly. Also, have a look at the pressure head. 99% it can be the large air bubble trapped in it.
Here are some tests the professional plumber’s do if the pump is not turning off
Check the air pressure in the tank. The water side and air pressure should be same
If the pump doesn’t shut off at 40 psi, then check the pressure or foot valve failure
Turn on the circuit breaker
Adjust the pressure switch safely
I think that the problem is caused by the air pressure build inside the pump.
