Re: What Thread Sealant for White Plastic Pipe?

Got it all back together. What a pain. A wire brush and small pick got the old pipe dope off. I ended up trying the Loctite 55 for the new sealer. I like it because it has no drying or set time and I think less likely to loose a seal years down the road if a joint moves. The stuff is like thick floss and feels like teflon tape. I ended up trying Bowdrie's suggestion of hose clamps on top of the screw fittings. Probably overkill, but I dont want to fuss with this part of the boat again for a long time, and Ive worked with nylon enough to know it can be fussy with too loose or to tight. Took a heat gun to get the hoses off and on. No leaks the first time.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Thanks for the update and let's hope it all works well for many years.

The Loctite 55 is interesting. Loctite tell us it is a multifilament polyamide thread with an inert proprietary paste but that could mean almost anything

CrispyCringle, I should have posted this earlier.
Should you find yourself having to do plumbing stuff in the future, file away this link.
At the bottom of page 1, make note of the "Custom hose adaptor".
These are the "cat's meow", for working with 1-1/2" hose, no barbs.
Hose installation and removal is accomplished without resorting to tools or colorful language, (use good practice, double hose clamps on any fitting).
Another tip, use hose with wire in it only if you MUST.
The wire helix resists the efforts of hose clamps to do their job, (duh,) and if forced over barbs removal sometimes requires demolition efforts.

Thats a great link. Thanks, bookmarked. Yeah, the barb fittings are a major pain. I had to use a heat gun to have any hope of removal or putting the pipes back on. I thought it would be a fairly quick job. But, it wasnt.

Available in all big box stores.
I also consider Rectorseal to be the best thread sealant.

Teflon [PTFE] tape, paste, and pipe dope is intended for METAL pipe, and fittings - NOT Plastic(s).
When PTFE tape is wrapped around plastic male threads, it packs the threads, increases the pipe diameter, prevents the pipe threads from meshing properly, adds strain and tensile stress, and encourages over tightening.
Use a SEALANT on plastic pipe fittings.
