Re: When Ideal is not ideal - Cheap source of good hose clamps?

Well, I just twisted the head off another hose clamp. Other than dealing with old boat parts, what am I doing wrong?

There was a clog in a thru-hull fitting. So I closed the valve (felt it moosh something, too) and loosened the hose clamps.

Then I fought to get the hose off and cleared the clog (mostly grass), and made sure water ran freely through the valve.

I closed the valve, put the hose back on, and began to retighten the clamp. SPROING! The head twisted off. It wasn't even tight yet - I opened the valve and water dripped out of the hose. It's stamped "IDEAL TRIDENT 300 SERIES" and shows a small amount of rust.

Should I not expect to be able to loosen and reattach a hose clamp? If I open one up is it immediately trash and should be replaced with a brand new one?

The test above proves ABA is the superior brand, and even at 5x the cost seems like a no brainer for important fittings.

See attached photos.

This makes me think that I need to replace all the clamps below the waterline because I do not trust that brand anymore.

Does anyone know about a reasonably-priced source of good (ideally "embossed" instead of "slotted") stainless clamps in the US?

Is there any difference between the #8 AWAB clamps sold by Atlantic Boat Supply via Amazon at $23 per 10 and the similar AWAB clamp sold by Jamestown at $45.87 per box of 10?

I look forward to some learning!

Many different types of hose clamps

Each has a specific purpose

https://www.normagroup.com/norma/en/products/

For instance Google... constant torque hose clamp

When a hose assembly handling cooling water heats up , it expands

If the wrong hose clamp is used , the clamp will become over torqued by the hot , cold expansion cycle ...it will fail.
