Re: Why won't my water pump stop if there's no leak ?

I have a similar problem except my pump will turn off some times and other times continue to run. It seems very odd and don't know what could cause it to run sometimes and not others.

Manufacturers say mount in any position.

Every pump manufacturer has dozens of different pumps. Some are NOT self priming.
Its wise to filter water when filling your tank. Amazon has carbon filters for garden hose for 12or 14$ .Install a strainer before the pump. A new installment can have plastic filings or thread cuttings or who knows what end up in the pump.
The shurflo i buy comes with strainer and hand tight hose fittings included.
My shurflos lasted 12and 22years. And i rebuilt them for spares.
Imho and experience, any qwik connector is prone to leak in liquid or gas funtion.
Water doesnt compress but air in the line will actually fool the pressure switch.
I recently got a seaflo , similar design to shurflo, 59$ with strainer.
Lots of options out there with different uses and gpm and pressure settings.

Actually Jabsco says that when mounted on a vertical surface the pump head should be mounted below the motor. The pump will work in any position but if it leaks its best if the water doesn't drip on the motor.

Re: Why won't my water pump stop if there's no leak ?

If your pump does not cut off after you close the faucet you either have a leak or a pump problem. When you reopen the faucet is there air in the line? If you shut the pump down and open the faucet do you get water until the pressure is lost? If not you have an air leak air downstream or in the pump. In a small leak situation your pump should cycle not run nonstop. I would bet on a pump issue like the pressure sensor but double check your filter installation for pressure leaks. If your line holds pressure repair or replace the pump. I would not not waste hours messing with it but that is me. If you cannot return your pump for a replacement you can get one new for well under $100. If you can live with the problem for a month or two you can always try calling the manufacturer.

Re: Why won't my water pump stop if there's no leak ?

Also my problem.
Changed the micro switch, checked again and againfor leaks but the pump still kicks in imtermittently - not continually in my case. I have adjusted the switch setting endlessly (SUREFLOW PUMP). Finally I have bought an accumulator which I will fit in a week or two. Hopefully problem solved.

I thought this setup was foolproof, but apparently it's not. When I first started the pump with the faucet open, it pumped water through the filters and to the tap without problems, but once I closed the tap, the pump never stopped (I manually stopped it after 5 minutes). I've checked for leaks by following all the piping, and there's none. Should I let the pump on longer before it stops ? I thought it would stop almost immediately since there's no pressure tank in the system (and start immediately as soon as I started using water).

The other weird thing I witness is that the water flow is very irregular. Do all pumps produce that kind of irregular flow, or is it only this specific model ? if so, I guess I will have to install a pressure tank after all ...

Thanks a lot!

Brann

Bypass your filters and see if it stops. You may have air trapped in them.

Re: Why won't my water pump stop if there's no leak ?

We also had this issue.
It turned out that the pressure pulse from the water pump was tripping the safety pressure valve on the hot water cylinder. Which would then stay open , dumping water out a through hole.

So make sure you know every possible path for fresh water, and check them all for leaks.

(I removed the old pump three times, then installed a new one, before I found the above)

Re: Why won't my water pump stop if there's no leak ?

ok- so I have a similar problem. My pump runs (noisy) and then I can hear the motor continuing to run (pump now makes no noise)¨

I had a spare pump - replaced the old one with new right out of the box. Checked the air pressure in my accumulator -ok

I am sure my accumulator has pressure, because if I turn off my pump and open the faucet, I get pressurized water for about 15 seconds (accumulator pressuring the water)

I do have the facuet spitting - but I ahve double tanks and even switching from one to the other doesn't cure this.

I have cleaned my surflow filter.

Sometimes it all works perectly - the pump builds pressure in the system and the pressure switch activates and turns off the pump

help?

Re: Why won't my water pump stop if there's no leak ?

have seen air drawn into the system through little cracks in prefilters, prefilters not screwed tight, old o-rings in them,...
I'd guess switching tanks would allow some air too, depending on type of valve; one airbubble next to the pressureswitch is enough to keep it from switching

Re: Why won't my water pump stop if there's no leak ?

This sounds like an unobvious breach in the system where air gets in somehow... You may have a loose hose clamp.... or the faucet is not fully closed and sealed.

Assuming the pump functions properly.... and you can test that with a closed "loop"... it will pressurize and stop... then the problem is a breach in the system... even a crack in the top of a water tank... shows little to no leak but prevents pressurization.

If pump is OK... try to isolate parts of your plumbing to find the area where the breach is.

Re: Why won't my water pump stop if there's no leak ?

...one day we had a 3GM30 on the base always losing it's prime after a few minutes of running - took us a while to find the little crack in the headertube of the dieseltank inside the tank...

I had the same problem... The safety pressure valve was somewhat worn-out and let out small amounts of water all the time... causing the pump to behave oddly. So the issue was resolved by replacing that safety valve.
