Amount of extra line for traveler

As unlearned as I am, YET. I'm pretty sure one doesn't need 61' of extra rope coming off the traveler! I swear the PO was rope crazy. What is an accepted amount. I have a 32' Freedom, 15' boom, and a 7' traveler. As always, thank you for you insights.

You only need enough to work the traveler from your normal traveler working position.

Run the traveler all the way to port, on starboard line take 3 turns on the winch and a comfortable tail (3-4'), repeat the other way. If the traveler is all the way to one side you want the ability to winch it back under load.

If you have adequate blocks, like Garhauer's 5 or 6:1 you don't need a winch. It's your boat, can't you measure it?

This is I believe the most logical answer, unless all of the wear occurs at one end, then you can just cut off the worn area if you have enough line and not have to buy all new.
But most people buy a standard amount of line, I believe my Genoa and Staysail halyards are 100’, there is about 20’ of excess that hangs on the mast, I plan on cutting that excess off now that they are down.
But I think most just buy a standard length and leave the excess.

Re: Amount of extra line for traveler

Ok, thanks guys, just wanted to know if there would be any reason for this amount of line to take up space.

Does the system look like this? There's lines everywhere!

No...just 62' of line coming off the traveler as "extra line"

all else is nice and neat

All of the above, OR change to a twin sheet system (like Catana Catamarans) and get rid of the traveler. Many other advantages, like outboard hoist, preventer etc.

Re: Amount of extra line for traveler

I like very short traveler lines. As short as practicable.

Re: Amount of extra line for traveler

You might consider using the long traveler line as a continuous line handling both port and starboard sides. That way there is a constant length in the cockpit and it needs only long enough to reach to the trimmer's location when the traveler is fully to leeward while the trimmer is on the opposite side. At 62 ft you might even have some line left over to cut off.
