Anchor chain stopper

I have been using a line to a D ring for many years to hold my anchor and free my windlass. I am now thinking to go with a piece of hardware. Any preferences? There are quite a few available.

Anchor chain stopper

I have one, and it’s a love hate thing, yes it works, but I can no longer drop anchor from the cockpit, I have to be on the bow, or the stopper will flip over and stop the chain, plus when it’s just chain going thru with no weight, it often catches and I have to lift it with my foot to keep it feeding out. No real issues, just aggravations that I didn’t have before

If what you have works, and works well, I’m not so sure I’d upgrade.

You use a snubber right, so what’s the stopper for? For me it’s to use to back down and set the anchor and as a back up in case the snubber breaks, but it’s not really necessary, unless the snubber were to break.

Re: Anchor chain stopper

The Lewmar chain stoppers are pretty good. They are beefy and still fit in a reasonable footprint. They would be better if the pin/clutch could be removed. Some of the other ones have a pretty large footprint, making install tougher or impossible.
