Attaching A Shade Sail to Shrouds...

Aloha,

I'm looking into having a custom shade sail made to shade the sailboat aft of the mast.

Is there any reason that it wouldn't be safe to attach two corners of the shade sail to the running rigging/lower shrouds that are aft of the mast? There would be some horizontal tension on them when the shade sail is installed. Is this a no-no?

Feedback? Ideas?

Thanks!
Matt

Not to worry, Matt. Our former boat we had an awning that attached to the cap shrouds, forward, and to the back stay, aft, with spreaders (pvc pipe) fore, mid, and aft. Worked fine. "Reefed" it over 25 kn., by rolling it all up, aft to fwd, and if necessary and for passages storing it in the rolled up configuration, lashed on deck. Had to disassemble it to stow it below.

Seeing as how I had an accidental jibe that tore the traveller car right off and the boom came around and slammed into a shroud, and it didn’t break, I can attest to them being very strong, way stronger than I believe any sail cloth could be.
I can’t imagine an issue
