Attaching Furling Line to Old Hood Furler

My furling line has pulled loose and I am unable to determine how it is attached. I have an old style Hood Furler that came with the boat I purchased a few years ago. It seems the furling line on most furlers routes through the furler drum to either the top or bottom of the drum where a half-knot is tied or inside the drum to a cavity where a half-knot is tied. Mine appears to have neither of these provisions just a passageway on the drum for the line. If I tie a half-knot at the end of this passageway, the furling line will not spool correctly. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I have attached a few photos that may help.
