Re: Ball park figure for running rigging

How many lines are you replacing? Multiply that by, say $300 per line and you have a high side ball park.

Ball park figure for running rigging

There have been some good ideas on estimating costs. I’ll try to keep track and report back if the sale goes ahead and I get to make the replacements.

Maybe some kind of prize to the closest estimate. [emoji846]

Matt, from memory West Marine used to have an "advisory" in their catalogs that had good guides on length for various bits of cordage, based on boat dimensions. Could be a help in totaling it all up.

Re: Ball park figure for running rigging

You might want to bring down your mast, which makes all this work a lot easier and will give you a chance to inspect the standing rigging, spreaders, electric wires, install new LED lights, and clean out any nests. Taking MAST up and down was $450 for me on my 30 foot Irwin. Well worth the money.

I changed the diameter of the jib sheet to better fit my winch. Do your home work.

I have hanked on head sail and use soft shackle to attach the jib sheets to the clew. Figure out if you want one long jib sheet or two jib sheets. Then figure out how you want to attach the jib sheets to the clew. This may be different than what you have now.

Making your own soft shackle out of Dyneema is fun. Lots of youtube videos on this.

Good luck and enjoy.

So how much does a foot of 1/2 inch line cost, and not the fancy stuff you can use for rigging too.

I used endura braid by New England….. defender $3.70 a foot did 4 halyards @. 130 feet each. Depends what your mast height is. These were wife’s Christmas present couple years ago.

Go on defender and price things out. Many options
Good luck

Re: Ball park figure for running rigging

If the running rigging is 'toast' then it is likely much more is 'toast'. Spars, blocks, sheaves. If its from the 1970s then so too would be electrics, bilge pumps, stoves... the list goes on. I bought a boat built in 1986 and while the sails were new and the running rigging, the blocks were 'toast', and the electrics shot or non existent, the stove 'toast', the Furler almost ' toast, no aso/spinnaker, no pole... no dodger, no cover, no dinghy etc... so while the ropes were new, all the other stuff has cost more than what I paid for the boat...

Thanks, I’m a pretty good judge of how toasted a boat is.

This is not my first rodeo.

Re: Ball park figure for running rigging

We had all of our running rigging replaced in Freo for 50ft Bene. 3x halyards, 2x jib sheets, main sheet, vang, topping lift, furler, 3x reefs. Dyneema double braid. Not the most elite racing stuff - but good quality cruising.
Cost about AUD$3.5k including labour.
Would be less of course if you do it yourself.

Great data, thank you. Yes, I'm a DIY kind of sailor. For better or worse.
