Barient 28 two speed problem

Hi All, I have a 1969 Hinckley 38' with Barient 28 primary winches that have not been serviced in a long time.

Took the starboard one out of the base and soaked it in diesel, it cleaned up pretty good without taking it down further. Problem is the port winch is a two speed and I only get one way action from the starboard.

Pawl installed wrong? I'm sure hoping its something simple like that.

Thanks for any input.

You are going to have to open it up and break it down. Don't just soak it is a solvent, completely break it down. My guess is just grease built up and keeping a pawl from engaging but you won't know until you take a look at it. I just replaced my old Barients with Lewmars and I miss my Barients.

Thanks for your reply callistov42!

I have come to the same conclusion, it's time to go deep, should have done it when I had it out but I thought (wrongly) that the axles for the gears were pressed and would have to be pressed out with a machine.

In the mean time, the port winch that still works completely but sticky has a frozen mounting bolt so I cannot get it out to clean or soak. I will never figure out while people tighten bolts so much.

Thanks Again

Chances are the fasteners are weather seized. Try to find..."Kroil" online and squirt the fasteners. Do it right. take them apart and clean them. I did my Barient 27 self tailers. I even had to machine some stripped out holes in the rope clutch and replace with Stainless Helicoils.
