Big Roached Mainsail

has anyone converted their catalac to running backstays to allow for the conventional catamaran large-roached main sail?

We have huge roach main and mizzen and they wouldn't allow for back stays, not even regular runners. Our runners go all the way to the masthead.

When converting, you need a very good rigger/sailmaker to determine if the balance under sail will be preserved. You probably need another jib too.

cheers!
Nick.

Before converting make sure the potential benefits of the new main can be 'utilised' by your hulls hydrodynamics and your predominant cruising style / area. Sometimes you can gain more by changing the foretriangle set-up.

I'm with barnakiel on this one. A lot changes with added roach, you don't need it, aren't rigged for it, and your hull can't take advantage of the power The CE moves up and sail area increases substantially. Increased load aloft is generally bad because the lever arm amplifies it. Add full length battens if you wish but think long and hard about the roach. Dave
