Re: Boom bag

What's a boom bag?

If not overly complicated I'd make it myself.

Re: Boom bag

Geoff I paid $1200 for my boom bag on the Sunshine coast 6 years ago and thought that was a good deal. It still looks good so I reckon that was good value. $1700 sounds ok to me.
Depending on the design there is a bit of mucking around making one correctly.
Cheers

It's another name for StackPack or sail pack.

Re: Boom bag

Part of the trouble is that the cost of Sunbrella has gone up tremendously. I recently made chaps for our dinghy, which is 3.4 m. long, the tubes are 20 in. diameter. The Sunbrella alone was only 120AUD--BUT, it was an offcut from a sailmaker's order, and even on e-bay, it's hard to find under $20/meter.

For a boom bag, just the materials are probably going to be dear. If you already have the old one, you can pick it apart to see how it is made and to have a pattern, and sew your own.

I would say that you might save some money by having it made from Weather Max, but in my experience, the WM fades, especially the dark red (which becomes an ugly color to mer), and it is only guaranteed 5 yrs., whereas the Sunbrella is for 10. The previous dinghy cover we made was from WM, in grey, and the fading wasn't too bad, but the fabric did just what you'd expect in the sun, and got all weak, susceptible to tearing. Which is why the new one is Sunbrella, in spite of its vulnerability to chafe.

Good luck with the project, whether you decide to make it yourself, of have it made.

Ann

Re: Boom bag

ChrisR I was thinking the same thing. I just asked a client today what he paid for his new boom bag on a 50-footer and he said $2750. That involved measuring and fitting. The boom bag looks really good.
Bully you sound really cheap, does that price include coming down to the boat to do the measuring?
Cheers

If its local, it includes measuring and I charge extra $100 to fit. If not local, I send off measurement form.
Made from Weathermax or Marine Canvas with Tenara stitching.

Apologies, the sail cover picture did not copy correctly. Bully is a marine service provider, and his post is now in the MSP archives. I apologize for the inconvenience.

It was a picture of a really tidy looking boom bag, nice.
