Re: Bronze chainplates refit to hull opinions about toe rail and bend location

Hi,

Thanks! I used bronze carriage bolts which I purchased from Port Townsend Foundry, who also made my CPs. I think you can buy them from other sellers though, eg: McMaster or Fastenal.

I think carriage bolts are the way to go. The whole process is so much easier.

By the way, I beveled and sealed the holes in the hull with Butyl tape. There are different types, and I used the one sold by Compass Marine. Having used the cheap stuff sold for RVs, I can tell you that the stuff sold at Compass Marine is noticeably better. It's stickier and more elastic.

No leaks since installed last year and, yes, I don't mind burying the rail.

Matt

Butyl tape was also my intention as well as the carriage bolts.

Fine examples!! I've been looking at them for a while now.tring to get an idea of the lengths of them. I have 4 inches if I don't notch out the rub rail. if I go 4" wide and 4" long I know isn't as good as making the long straps. But will save a whole lot of fun work of notching the rub rail and heating them and putting a bend in them. Does any thing there Jump out at you as insufficient in your opinion?

Those rub rails on those pics are integral molded in the hull, i guess they want to keep some aesthetic.. plus grind those rub rails add more work to the Project,,, me think the rounded plates are copy from the Sundeers as other poster mention, if your clearance between the rub rail v cap rail is not as great to fit a long strap then use as much material as posible in the bottom of the plate, as a rule of thumb for me the plate thicknes could be the same or a bit greater than the wire thicknes, to be honest i have 0 experience in Bronze plates,, is a wonderful material but i never test it in a chainplate, so the thicknes is beyond to me.....

OP--that last photo is one really ugly way to do it.

How about a closeup of your actual chainplate installation?

If you are asking me for close ups I haven't started the installation as of yet..but I'd like to do a build along in the event someone with my same boat would like to improve upon or duplicate my process.
