C-30 Mk I - Mast Cover: Any reason not to add one?

I'm in the process of upgrading my nav light fixtures to LEDs and notice that the top of the mast on my C-30 Mk I is open to the elements.

Are there any reasons why I shouldn't add a small (removable) cover plate to help keep rain and debris (bird droppings, leaves, etc.) out of the mast.

See attached sketch (proposed cover area shown in green). With the present mast design, the windex and wind sensor brackets (removed) only cover their respective base areas visible in the picture; the mast channel remains open to the elements.

Looking into the Catalina manual for this boat, the mast looks open at the top so it seems it was designed this way. Other masts on the rack are designed with mast covers.

Thx for any feedback.

If it's keel-steeped, definitely--anything that'll keep water out of the bilge is good. If it's deck-stepped, and the heel drains well, then not so important.
