Can the sheave of this stanchion block be replaced or is it time to buy new?

$118 for a replacement, hate to add more stuff to the landfill. Can this be repaired or is it time to replace it?

Yes, it can be renewed with some effort. You will need to drill the head off one side of the axle, drive it out and replace it (and of course the sheave) with a bolt. I've done it on a fair number of blocks myself and not had a problem from the process. The sheave can be sourced from any one of several firms... doesn't have to be from Schaefer (sp?).

Good luck with the job.

Have you invested the time and energy to learn how to repair things, including basic mechanical, metal, and wood shop skills? Invested in the required tools? Obviously, replacement is more efficient. And that is why we throw things away.

You might find one in a second hand store.

I have replaced the sheaves on several blocks just like that. Drill the revit head off, knock the pin through. I obtained replacement sheaves from west marine, you might find it cheaper elsewhere. I replaced the rivet with a S.S. bolt and S.S. aircraft nut. Get a bolt of the correct diameter with threads only on the last 1/4 inch.

Works quite well

Go to “hardware@scheafermarine.com” ......you can send the block to them and they will replace the pulley.

That exact block goes for $90 at defenders. There are also some less expensive ones there, too, if your line is 3/8 or less....

I’m such a novice I can’t even see anything wrong with it. What’s the issue?

The sheave (wheel the rope runs on) is completely shot - broken pieces, mangled, and eccentric.

Ah, now I see it. Thank you.

How does that happen? There’s not a ton of force applied to it, right? It just guess the rope somewhere else?

Re: Can the sheave of this stanchion block be replaced or is it time to buy new?

I have the same problem with an old mainsheet block with cam cleat attached. It seemed it was going to be cheaper to buy a new one, the correct size sheaves didn't appear to be available anymore. It seems such a waste, but it remains in the "to do someday" pile.

Sunlight is the enemy of those plastic sheaves.

And just where can you get a sheave machined for ten bucks? Between material and labour, I'd bet closer to fifty... and that'd be mates rates.

The replacement sheaves of that sort of size are well less than ten AUD, even here in expensive Oz (from Ronstan via Whitworths, not a particularly inexpensive route!). Likely cheaper in the States.
