Re: Damage to rigging?

That's simply a bad idea.

It would really help if you specified which idea you think is a poor one. That, along with why it's a bad idea, & also share a few "good ones" with which to fix the problem(s). Possibly even specifying why they're good ideas, along with their plusses & minuses.

Folks tend to react more positively to such an approach, than to someone simply stating that X is a bad idea. Although in this case I don't know what X is, as it's not clearly specified.

Re: Damage to rigging?

On an Atlantic crossing I had a shroud fail, luckily we tacked fast to ease the load, so no serious damage. A u-bolt had been fastened to the shroud to stop the spreader sagging and this had stopped the normal working of the strands and a fatigue failure at that point.

Since then I have always recommended nothing clamped to stranded wire.

Re: Damage to rigging?

Well....... it looks like I'm going to go a different route. Putting my hand on the stay I can feel it working back and forth. What I originally thought was a good idea and design now has me worried. I took it off this afternoon.

I'll rig it up temporarily on the arch to see if it's high enough so it won't bother me. I suspect it won't be high enough. I have a center cockpit and the top of the arch is only about 2 feet above my head when I'm standing at the helm.

I really don't want to put it on the mast. The wiring would be a nightmare.

Do any of you have experience with a horn mounted at deck level? I could possibly put it under one of the mast granny bars. Or maybe in front of the dodger.

Re: Damage to rigging?

I took the advice most of you gave. The backstay is not a good place to put it. It's now on the arch.

Thanks. Larry
