Re: Davit falls

the big problem with davits is getting the dingy to sit up tight against the cross beams.
,once you have 2 blocks on the lift to the lifting strop in the dinghy floor there is not enough distance left to pull the tubes hard up against the davits.

webbing strops are rigged from the very end of the davit to a cleat on the upper inboard side of the upright part of the davit, these when tight support the dingy and stop it moving fore and aft and side to side in a seaway.

effective davit's are also the full width of the dinghy with the lifting eyes midway, rater than at the end.

sorry havent got any photos, but from experiance on a long passage any movemont can cause a lot of wear to the top of the tubes.

Re: Davit falls

Thanks Atoll, got it.
We have the same system for our rescue boat, webbing slings that pull the boats hard in against the davit upright
Thanks for the tip on the positioning of the lifting eye, makes sense.

Re: Davit falls

Straps I've seen are generally separate from the hoisting rig.
Once mine dink is hoisted I grab the end of the straps with the boat hook and feed them into slots in a winch drum (similar to what tractor trailors use to tie down loads) that I built into my davits.
Works well...can really suck it up tight...no movement and a great place to sit.

I take most of the credit for the davits...I just love that kind of project...I'm a pretty fair metal fabricator, and have the wood stuff dicked....but I cant do a nice SS weld or polish to save my life.

Beirut has her challenges...but finding well healed folks to party with isn't one of them.

Re: Davit falls

I tried to rig it up once, but found the weight of the 10 ft RIB and 15 hp Yamaha to be too much with all the friction. It was no issue holding both lines and standing in one spot. Hauling the engine end is harder so I did it and just easily pulled the other end up as I went.

Re: Davit falls

I use 4 ratchet straps to secure the dink. One at each end and two diagonally. Dink doesn't move a millimeter.

Re: Davit falls

Attached is a picture of a set of davits similar to what I'm planning to fit.
Constructive criticism welcome, and suggestions on where to fit straps.
Is there any reason not to secure the web straps direct to the dink rubber hand holds and back to the davit?

Re: Davit falls

From the photo, a tender + outboard ++ could be of the order of 100Kg. With a safety factor of 3 that's 300Kg, or 150 Kg on each arm. Add on a few large solar cells and...

They may make it with a downward vertical only force, but what about swinging from side to side, or even fore and aft?

The more substantial installations that I've seen have used square sections that look to be of the order of 3" across.

You may not like trailer (drum?) winches but with two (one on each arm), each having two lifting lines (falls?) it would be possible to lift the dinghy closer to the arms. The arms could then be lower.

I'd also suggest having vertical pads on the arms such that the side of the dinghy is snug against them. The fore part of the tender needs to have a line led aft to the stern of the yacht, the aft part of the tender needs a line led forward. I used an old PVC fender on the pushpit (not in photo).
