Deepfrz, you are correct in that the chainplate is unidirectional fiberglass with a stainless steel rod running horizontally. The problem is that there is no good way to inspect the chainplates for integrity.

I'm going to have both chainplates beefed up good...don't ever want to go through that again. And my next purchase is a big ole' pair of bolt cutters. I'll see if I can post some pictures.

Just remaster today in my MacGregor 26M. I was able to rig it like I trailer and motor 60 miles home, not a fun ride but she got me there.

An FYI!
The best way to cut cable whether is be SS or synthetic is an abrasive wheel, like a 24V angle grinder. You can even take locks off in a few seconds with one of these.
To hell with the bolt cutters!
