DIY Boom brakes

I’d like a boom brake but they seem fairly expensive, does anyone have any designs or examples of good homemade brakes?
Also any opinions of boom brakes based on experience would be great ( even if you have an expensive one ) cheers

Re: DIY Boom brakes

The largest Dutchman boom brake worked great on a 400 sq ft main but was not reliable on a 700 sq ft main.

I've used this and they work. No affiliation.

Have you looked at the Wichard boom brake for inspiration?

I figured a similar system could be constructed from a bit of stainless rod and a welder. Not nearly as elegant or well made, I am sure.

It's a project I intend to tackle one day, however first I have to figure out where I'd rig the thing because my deck house makes it very difficult.

That looks similar in concept to the DreamGreen model that @groundtackle posted.

Also linked when I searched was this test which has some interesting points: https://www.yachtingworld.com/yachts...eventers-65517

There was also a different concept in that test that I hadn't seen before, the SailFuse, which is a weak link type system:

I also posted this thread in the Platino Disaster discussion here: http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ml#post2956422

Yes, seems to operate on a similar principle.
