I couldn’t imagine leaving the drive system above deck. Even below deck, the exposed drive system might be in an area where hands, hair, etc might be caught in the drive.
A deep, large baking pan, suitably cut out to fit, might work as a drive shield.

You’re looking for DC gear motors. Then decide on the speed and horsepower you want

Re: DIY Vertical Electric Rope Winch

Chotu, got a thought for you. Was watching a video on the Gunboat cats awhile back. All lines are led inside the pilot house onto a drum. Then electrical to the drum. Can you ping them and see how they set up their engineering. I’m pretty sure I either got it on YouTube or that young Brit who does these yacht reviews.

Hope it helps.

Chotu, why can’t an industrial grade right angle Milwaukee drill be used on a wench drum with some clever reverse engineering and switch relay?

It's all indoors.

I don't call my boat the poor man's Gunboat for nothing. Ha ha.

Seems all I ever do is think up solution Gunboat already did.

So yes, this is all indoors in the salon on something I'm calling the "sail management table." All controls, including reefing and dagger boards are run here. It's the nerve center of the boat, right next to the helm.

There are a lot of high pollution days where I can't be outside due to the asthma. I still want to sail regardless of pollution, so the entire boat is controlled from the salon. With air conditioning and heat as well as HEPA filtered air if needed.

Re: DIY Vertical Electric Rope Winch

Chotu hi
Nilsson winches here in NZ used Lucas starter motors to drive early model anchor winches - google V1000. They modified the starter motors as they could not import other components due to restrictions. They still supply a new version and parts for originals -and you can pretty well drive anything you want with these - or modify your own
Good Luck

I’m not sure of the cost implications are but for the best gear reduction in a small space you need to be looking at using an epicyclic gear set. See one here http://https://www.neugart.com/en/planetary-gearbox/epicyclic-gearing/

Essentially this is exactly what is in the bottom of your average primary sheet winch. It will provide huge reduction and thus great torque multiplication. I’m not necessarily recommending the vendor in the thread, you should do some web surfing.

It's an interesting gearbox. Thanks. I'll have a look at these also.

I do have all the space in the world under the control table where the mechanism will be. Table is 1.3m x 1.3m. 48"x48".

Yes, that's what the old Ideal windlass uses as well. Thanks!

+1 on starting with a truck winch. Find the winch drum that will mount on truck winch, and you are done. Down size it to your application and mount as needed. I have often thought about having a back up truck winch on board next to my house hold sump pump just in case.

Do you remember how the gearing went?

Re: DIY Vertical Electric Rope Winch

OR you could just electrify a winch like the old barient 32s that I have as my primary winches-- I just finished doing this and you get a purpose built 2 speed setup with all of the electrical parts included. there is an outfit out of Au that can supply you with everything you need. I just finished doing my two primaries and I would have to think that size winch could handle just about anything you would need-- ithey are the equivalent of about a 56 or 58 on the modern scale. I needed some room below the winch but you are going to need that for a vertical capstan anyway.

Chotu, you are aware of these right.
Seems easier than this plan, forgive me if I'm not getting it. Cordless Winch handles.
