Downsizing halyards

I am replacing my jib and main halyards on a passport 40. I never race. Causal crusing only. After much research into the confusing issue of the proper line, I've narrowed it down to a couple of choices. VPC or MLS3. They seem to be the consensus as the best choice of function vs $$$. My question is this: The halyards I have now are at least 15 years old (came with the boat). Probably polyester. They are 11mm. Given the decrepitude of my old lines, and the superior tech of the new lines, would I be safe in downsizing the new halyards to 10mm? Cost savings for that 1mm are substantial. Not that I can't afford the 11mm, but I don't know if I need it. It seems like 11mm in the new lines is drastic overkill, but if I had a clue I wouldn't be asking you guys. Any advice appreciated.

Re: Downsizing halyards

11mm sta-set has a breaking strength of 6,000#, 10mm VPC 6500# and less stretch. As long as it works in your clutches and winches, seems like a no brainer.

Re: Downsizing halyards

Thanks, I had not compared the two. In my defense, there is a lot of material on the subject.
