Dyneema?

Is there an easy way to tell if the core of a rope is dyneema? I have a rope with a frayed outer core but the inner plaited core is fine. If it's dyneema that's where the strength is and the outer core is for handling and chafe protection. The cause of chafe seems to be gone so I'd rather not replace it for a while if it's just cosmetic.

Re: Dyneema?

Dyneema is usually 12 strand and the core is hollow.

If the core is compressed longitudinally the hollowness of the core is revealed.

Very slippery. Melts. Floats even if soaked. Noticeable hard to cut with scissors.

Re: Dyneema?

Thanks. That's what this is. And I was told it is dyneema. But I know there are other materials made into 12 strand plaited rope. I don't know if they exist in a double braid. But since the cover is chafed all the strength is on the core and it could be a big deal if it failed.

Re: Dyneema?

Dyneema is just a trade name for UHMWPE Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene.

There are many makers of the later and Thinwater's description about sums it up. The inner core is coated (slippery) and completely separate from the outer.
