Re: Furler help

The furler on our boat needs replaced it’s a beautiful stainless steel rod version made by a company long gone out of business and due to its construction it is a ticking time bomb,
The main mast is coming off shortly for new rigging so now is the time to replace it or I will have no confidence in the rig.
Were trying to do this on a budget but also build the boat for blue water cruising and she has been overbuilt (70s long keel ketch that weighs around 13t) so want to continue with this ethos and not fit any thing that may be a weak link, ideally I’d find a second hand system that still has available parts and rebuild it but they seem few and far between, so trying to keep to a budget of around £2000 I’ve found the following (needs to accept a 8mm forestay)
Profurl c350
Sailspar (seem to bed on the upper size limit for these)
Furlex 200s (second hand rebuilt, may be too small)
Alado a4 (not that cheap by the time it’s imported)
Harken esp unit 1 (bit on the light side)
Can anyone recommend any other options, the issue seems they spec these by length usually but the weight of our boat usually means it requires the larger version however she is a ketch so less of a foresail, I need to confirm sizes when I’m next home.

Re: Furler help

The Profurl is a decent unit. Clearly built to a price, but with a warranty.

This is an option, got a contact to speak with about them.
I like the idea of the sailspar but I think it only has one luff groove and would like to possibly run twin head sails

Furler help

We just purchased a harken unit 1 for our Alberg 30 we are fitting out for cruising.

Most furlers I looked at where sized around the forestay wire size and turnbuckle pin size. Upsizing may be difficult.

The Harken unit was the most recommend by the riggers we talked to.
