Despite the fact that "it's always been this way", take a photo of it, standing back far enough to capture a side view of the furler drum and the fairlead. Leave the furler line where it piles up, with some tension on it. Point of view must be centered vertically on the furler drum, so it is clear if there is an angle to the fairlead.
