Furler Question

I replaced the halyard on my jib, going with a simple twist shackle instead of the twist shackle to snap shackle it used before. I've attached photos of the new setup furled and unfurled. In both photos it appears that the halyard is twisted to the side and rubbing against the bracket on top of the mast.

Can anyone tell me what's wrong here?

Re: Furler Question

The use of a halyard restrainer would prevent this. https://www.harken.com/productdetail...5709&taxid=544
You can see them in use on both my staysail and yankee in this photo.

Re: Furler Question

On our Pro Fur units it’s called a wrap-stop. Worse than what you showed is when the halyard wraps continuously around the stay.

Re: Furler Question

likely caused by your top swivel not 'swiveling' easily, or perhaps too much space between swivel and halyard exit box

check your swivel is moving freely and maybe try a strop between top of sail and swivel, to let swivel sit higher (and reduce the amount of halyard showing)

cheers,

Re: Furler Question

That looks just fine. If anything, see if you can get the halyard up another inch or so when you have the sail unfurled next in light wind. Good clearance, no issue with halyard catching on top of foil as long as tension is good on halyard.

Wouldn't really be able to properly a restrainer without shortening the luff if the sail. And generally those profurl ones mentioned are missing/broken or not installed right. Profurls are OK, they are cheap like French boats so there are a lot of them.

Re: Furler Question

It might help to add length at the tac in order to shorten the halyard showing when it’s hoisted.
