GooseneckCommon or custom?

I somehow over looked this before buying my boat although I got it.

Are these easy to source and replace or do I need to go custom?

And recommendations?

That is a stock goose neck fitting. I think I once read that it is a Herrishoff design. Available in multiple sizes. Rig-Rite sells them at outrageous prices, their standard practice.

I would think that the first step would be to clean and disassemble the area components. You can likely see better than what is apparent in the photo, but I'm wondering about the condition of the track. Has the bottom car on the gooseneck corroded away or broken? It might be a machine shop repair once everything is well examined.

'looking again at that bumpy and flaking paint on the mast; I think that needs a closer look too. There might be some pitting and oxidation corrosion under that paint that needs stabilizing and a protective coating. As I recall, I've had success with a zinc chromate primer over a refurbished surface like this.

Hi Makr0, I would recommend that you add your current location and make and model of boat to either the post or your general profile to get more specific advice.

If it's a common part and you are reachable by mail it might be worth buying, if you are remote or a 'stock' part is too expensive it might be better/practical as a custom. I don't thing I'd try a welded repair unless I was sure of the alloy and skill of person welding.

Edit: A used one in better condition might be an option too but would also needs to know make/model/part #/ or basic dimensions to verify fit.

Disassembly and inspection looks to be in order as mentioned up-thread.

Currently I work at a firm that has a machine shop and we have a friendly 'procedure' for side jobs that involves some sort of reciprocation and/or bakery goods. I will miss that if/when I leave the company...

Re: GooseneckCommon or custom?

I am in Vancouver Canada so very reachable.

My boat is Windward 28 that has been modified a bit, I’m not sure if the mast is stock...

Re: GooseneckCommon or custom?

The plot thickens! I don’t need to find a replacement. I have a second gooseneck on my mast. My slip mate is going to help me move it.

Re: GooseneckCommon or custom?

I am interested to know how two of those worked and if the higher one was for clearance at the dock...and if the lower one was for sailing...and if/how the slugs work in the track with the extra gooseneck...? Keep in mind my one boat only has a sprit sail (thinking of going up to a balanced lug) and the other is a simple sliding/rotating thing for the roller boom so I know precious little about these things other than having a good idea what 'broken' looks like.

Re: GooseneckCommon or custom?

I finished the swap weeks ago. I have a less than pretty pic after I completed the move.

The running theory is that the gooseneck I moved was the racing mode gooseneck. The boat has a long history, from a successful racer to a learn to cruise charter. The lower position absolutely sucks for cruising and is at that perfect knock your head off height.

Unfortunately half my sails need the height but in a stoke of luck will still work perfectly if the Cunningham is rigged. the Sail shape I'm told is passable that way.

At least I'm sailing(poorly) again.
