Groove

What is the groove in this piece of hardware for.

It looks like a Selden low friction snap shackle. I don't think that groove has a real purpose other than manufacturing and keeping weight down. It's most likely a casted piece. The snap shackle is wide to give a large surface on the inside for smooth operation of a line sliding thorough it. If it's a cast part, the groove minimizes the amount of metal used to reduce weight. It could also be forged, but it would for the most part be the same deal.

One of my dock mates has two of these.one is solid and the other one looks like the one I posted.He asked me.I told him some one on this forum would know.These things are heavy duty I know that.Thanks for your opinion.
