Headstay double jaw toggle replace

Hello All,

For the newbie, how hard is it to replace a double jaw toggle at the base of the headstay (roller furling)? Loosen the backstay, use halyards to rig a temp forestay, and replace?
Boat is a keel step with manual backstay adjuster.

Appreciate any tips. Thanks!

Whats the toggle connected to, is it a threaded T in the bottom end of a turn buckle?

One pin is through the chain-plate connected to the bow and the other through a plate/eye at the bottom of the furler drum. There is no turnbuckle below the furler drum.

It's this style toggle:

Thanks!

Re: Headstay double jaw toggle replace

Had to disconnect my headstay to change the bottom bearing in my Schaffer furler. Did what you are planning to do. What I underestimated was the weight of the furling system on the headstay. All of a sudden I was being pulled aft by the weight of the system as it was trying to go vertical. I was able to grab my furling line, tied it to the furler and snubbed it off on a bow cleat. I was working alone as usual. Thought I was screwed on reconnecting it. What I wound up doing was backing off on the backstay even more. I attached a ratchet strap above the bottom of the furler, (drum was off), attached the other end to my anchor roller and used the ratchet strap as a come-along to pull the headstay into place. Other than the oh***t moment, it was really quite easy. Just rig something so you can pull the headstay back into position, you will never do it by your self, with no mechanical advantage.

It's not just the weight. Lacking a rigging screw on the forestay means that you have to put a lot of tension on the stay to get the holes lined up, even with the backstay eased well out. You may need to bend the mast a bit, too. A comealong or handy billy tackle seized onto the foil and lead to a nearby strong point will help. A 400 pound gorilla is good, too.

I got tired of the struggle on our boat and added a rigging screw!

Re: Headstay double jaw toggle replace

We must remove the head stay and cutter stay curlers to permit the travel lift close enough to the mast for a pick up. You should have no trouble stabilizing things with a halyard. Slack the back stay but first mark the threads so you can get it back together with proper tension. Use the halyard to force the mast forward. This will create enough slack to disassemble.

All above advise good, but you may need to back off the aft lowers, after marking the threads to get the mast bent forward enough.
