Personally I go with "DOOR RAD". Though I can't ever recall it coming up in a conversation. Most of the time it's talk about engines and heads!

Re: How Do You Pronounce " Dorade "

I always heard it duh-rod' accent on the second. Outlook hasn't a clue. I did a look-up. I was wrong.

Latitude 38 Letters - April 2000

What is the proper pronunciation of the word 'dorade'? I've heard two different versions, but don¹t know the historical context by which to determine the correct one. The first is pronounced do-RAH-dee š like the fish 'dorado', but with a different vowel ending. The second is pronounced DOH-rade š as in 'do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti-do'. Until we know which is right, we'll have to call it the 'water proof air scoop'.
Scott Valor
Nordstar, Cheoy Lee 41
Santa Cruz
Scott š The second pronunciation is the correct one. The term comes from the vents on Dorade, the skinny 52-foot yawl that won the 1931 TransAtlantic and Fastnet races, thereby catapulting Sparkman & Stephens to the forefront of yacht design for the next half-century. By the way, dorade vents are considered passe now on luxury yachts, their reason for existing having been replaced by š how gross! š air conditioning.

Either can be pronounced as "bow-low" or "beau" ( as in Beauty) and "lew".

Sorry, come from that bilingual country of Canada. Yeah, it's true, our Quebec french can't be understood by the Parisian speakers, but it is ours, eh?

When it's spelled correcty, buoy is pronounced boy, just like the wee laddie at school. But here in Amerikay, the Yanks pronounce it boo-wee, which is what you do when frightened by the boo.

Thank-you Breakaway, that was my take, too. The beautifully shaped metal "scoops" I would call cowls and the dorades are the boxes on which they're mounted and which serve to separate (one hopes) water from air before the air flows below (at least for for cowl opening facing into the wind). Correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: How Do You Pronounce " Dorade "

Down under its Dorr Ahd , Or Phonetically- Dorrard!. Which stands to reason given its french roots. Then again a root means something completely different down here. (not going there!!)
