How Long does it take to Replace Rigging....

Thought I'd break down times it has taken me to replace the rigging on a 44' Cat with Upper and Lower Diamonds, Caps and Lowers and a forestay with Profurl Furler.

Prep boat for mast removal.... Remove Genoa, Main Sail & Sail Bag
Bring halyards/lines back to mast, bring electrical wires back to
mast, straighten split pins and detention rig. 6 Hours

Remove Mast with Crane, 2 People so hours shown are doubled,
but does not include Crane Operator or Dogman time 2 Hours

Remove Rigging and Mouse out halyards plus wire from Forestay 3 Hours

Swage New Rigging 7 Hours

Service Furler and mouse new wire through 1.5 Hours

Remove Boom ends, Boom Slides, Mast Sheave boxes,
Mast Head Sheaves, Gooseneck, 2 x Mast Steps, Mast Base
Anything not riveted was corroded in place and took a LOT
of work! Which is why you want the mast on the ground! 6 Hours

Make 14 Sheaves 4 Hours

Make Stainless Bushes for Gooseneck and Knuckle, New stainless
Pin replacement for boom end sheaves 3 Hours

Re-install all sheaves, sheave boxes, boom ends, drill out
gooseneck & Knuckle for bushes 3 Hours

Mouse out VHF Cable and Deck/Steaming Cable, Replace with
New cable, New aerial & new Light - Crimp/solder
all connections - Mousing in cable is a slow process with
one person 3 Hours

Re-Install rigging to mast, tune diamonds, mouse in New
Halyards, sika split pins and anything else that needed it 3 Hours

That,s where I am at at the moment, but I imagine that re-installing the mast, Running lines, Sails, rig tune etc will take another 8 Hours or so.

Some of my mast sheaves were in very poor condition along with some of the electrical wiring (VHF & Deck Steaming) looking like it was original, so 20 years old.

There is no way that you can do this level of work with the mast in situ!

All times are approx as I was not running a timer for each task!

My Privilege 39 took waaaay longer; I had a professional rigging company do it. Complications included frozen/siezed bolts/fitting that had to be Kroil penetrated over several days. Dealing with corrosion on the mast... sanding and painting. Process was started roughly about November 15th and finished about December 20th or so. Waiting on parts. Scheduling crane. They also had to convert the privilege metric parts to SAE throughout. Also sent off furler to be rebuilt. Sent sails to be repaired. I also added redundant dynema runners including a stainless compression fitting installed in the mast for the bolt holding the stainless fixtures about 4' down from the mast head that the top of the dyneema runners attach to.

I was not patient enough to wait several days for frozen items - A HUGE amount of heat, followed by Freeze and Release worked for most, sadly a few sheared off leading to drilling and then easy out and re-tapping, Although one of the boom end pins required a Hydraulic press to get out.

I have a straight aluminum mast, so no painting and corrosion was mainly around steel rivets which had not had Tefgel on them, which was as simple as drilling out and replacing.

This is a great breakdown, thank you for sharing. Many people don't realize all the hours involved in the prep for take down, stripping, swaging, stepping and putting everything back in place, etc etc.
Where did you get this done?

I am in Brisbane and have been working for a rigging company for the last 9 months and have learned enough and I also have access to everything I need to do the job, including a lathe which has been very handy - Just been doing it slowly over the Christmas break.

I'll get the guys to give it a final tune though

Very nice. Yeah that kind of field experience goes a long way.
How much longer in terms of hours do you think it would have taken you had you not had the 9 months experience?
