A time honored DIY approach: tighten until the mast buckles, then back off three turns.

(just kidding, of course)

Ivor Dedekam’s book is great way to help build that mental model of what tuning a rig is all about. Rake. Prebend. Overbend. And all that. Ivor is an illustrator and his pictures are worth the proverbial thousand words.

No Jim. I beg to differ. The time honored DIY approach is to loosen the rig until the mast inverts and falls over the side in a bit of snotty weather then tighten it a bit. [emoji1]
