How to dissassemble this winch?

You can see in the attached photo there is a phenolic ring which prevents the roller bearings from sliding up. I can't see any non-destructive way to remove it. There is no screw in the winch socket. Presumably there is a spindle retaining key under the roller bearings, but I can't see it. This is a two speed winch on my 1986 Jeanneau, but the label is worn off. The second picture is the label of my one speed center board winch, presumably the same brand.

Re: How to dissassemble this winch?

JBP,

I have Harken two-speed winches on my boat. The smaller ones are Harken 40.2ST. In order to service the interior shaft bearing, the winch must be removed from the deck.

The larger 53.2ST winches have center stems that are bolted (from the top) to the winch base. The larger winches don't have to be removed from the deck for servicing the interior, but the smaller winches don't have enough room for the center stem to bolt to the base. So, the base and the center stem are the same.

Here is Harken's service sheet for the 40.2ST winch:

Harken Winch 40.2ST 4602.3-93.pdf

This winch is different from yours, but the service sheet might help you.
