how to lift out a stubborn winch?

My two speed Levmar 40 is unbolted from below (five hard to reach 7/16 nuts).... I tapped on the protruding stud with a piece wood between hammer and stud.... nothing moves.... the winch base above is still solidly part of the coaming (she's a Catalina 27)....
Should I try to pry the winch base from above?
Has anyone encounter that situation.....
Any special tool (pry bar) you could recommend?

Need to service that winch (broken part inside the winch jaw) and lube.

Thanks

Re: how to lift out a stubborn winch?

You shouldn’t have to remove a Lewmar 40 from the winch base to service it.

Re: how to lift out a stubborn winch?

Most winches dissassemble from above ... you leave the base attached to the boat while servicing ... unless the base itself is the broken part.

does this help:

Agree w/the other posts to service the winch w/o removing the base.

It sounds like someone used 5200 to set your winch bases. There are solvents discussed in this article to help get the base unbonded if you still need to do that.

Tie a cleated line to it and crank away.

Our winches are Harken, but we have various models on the boat. We did all of them this past spring. There were small differences in how they came apart, but as everyone above has stated, they are serviceable (unless the base is broken as also noted above) from the topside of the winch without removing it from the base.

Service from above.
If you must remove it for something, take the drum off and unscrew the bolts holding it from above.
It may have been sealed down with 5200 making it hard to remove. Heat and a knife blade between the base and the boat.

Can you back the bolts out from the top?

To lift out a stubborn wench....
Just grab her by the arms and pull her through the main hatch.

Liquid caulks all have some adhesive qualities. 5200 is almost a glue with 4200, etc less strength but still will be a bit sticky. Steady pull with some help from a thin bladed knife works a treat. remove the fasteners, put the drum back on, wrap a few turns of a fixed ended line around it, crank it as tight as you can and wait till it pops loose.

Re: how to lift out a stubborn winch?

I just finished servicing two cockpit ST Lewmar 30 winches and a cabin top ST Lewmar 40 winch.

The cockpit, head sail winches were completely removed, base and all. The 40 on the cabin top , bolted through the cabin top with a wood backing block would not move.

I serviced the 40 by disassembling the winch from the top. If your winch base will not move then suspect 3M 5200 was used while mounting the winch.

Check the mentioned videos, go slow and take pictures. You will find that Lewmar has made the winches easy to service. The pins that hold the gears can only go one way.

Don't loose any parts...

Have the proper grease, oil and replacement springs on hand. Good Luck
