I need a new main sail

I'm looking for a main sail for a 1970ish Tanzer 22. Where is the best place online to find one? Or maybe even a slightly used one?

Depends on what part of the world you're in.

Re: I need a new main sail

Well, don't know of any in Arkansas but lots of places in the US sell used sails. Bacon Sails and Second Wind are a couple that I remember off the top of my head.

Ask Mr Google for "Used Sails" and at least 5-10 more will pop up. Lots of used sails are sold on dimensions so getting your measurements in advance will make the search much easier.

If you want to go new I bought my new main from Mack Sails in FL. Been buying sails from them for 40 years. Never had a problem. Prices were just as good as Chinese mail order sails.

Re: I need a new main sail

Ive done well by simply asking local sailmakers if they have anything used. Ended up with essentially a new North main from a J105 for 1/10 of what a new one would cost and it fit my boat perfectly. I went in with my rig measurements and they had a number of options.

If going used be sure the attachment hardware is at least somewhat compatible. In my case I lucked out the slugs were the same for my mast. I also bought used jibs and made sure the luff tape was same size.

Overall very pleased with going used this year.

I bought 2 mains, one racing one cruising (both North dacron in 7 & 9.5 cond), 3 jibs of various flavors (Doyle, North, UK in 6-7 cond) and a nice North asymmetrical spinnaker with snuffer sock for about half what a new main would have been.

Took a little leg work and measuring my rig plus some of them I bought sight unseen and had shipped.

Re: I need a new main sail

There are a number of places in the U.S that sell used sails but they are selling them on behalf of customers and take a percentage, so in my experience, they ask as much for them as they think they can get and there are not many real bargains to be found.

I recently purchased a set of new sails from National Sail Supply out of Florida. Very happy with the quality and service but most of all...the price. They have stock sails online with the prices.

Tanzer 22 Class Association

Personally I would look on kijiji (in canada). I would search Ontario and Quebec under the sailboats catagory. The T22 was made in Montreal, so there are tons of them here, many with spare sails that never, ever get used.

However, for a small sail like that (no offence, size is relative) you should at least get a quote for a NEW sail from a local sail loft. The T22 main is a very simple, small, standardized sail which may be cheaper than you think for a new one...I would guess a few hundred dollars.

Kingston Sail Loft – 774 Baker Crescent, Kingston (613) 531 9373

Look, this guy has 2 mainsails, maybe he'll sell you one of em?

Re: I need a new main sail

Go on Minney's Yacht Surplus - Home we find lots of used stuff there. They have a ton of sails. They're in CA but ship all over.

Good luck.

Re: I need a new main sail

Lots a great replies. Thank you for that.

According to Tanzer22 website. My mainsail has a Luff of 23' and foot of 9' and a leach of 28.43". Am I reading that right? I'm not finding any used sail with those exact dimensions. I've searched all the links previously posted

Will a sail with similar but not exact dimensions work?
