Instructions for crossed bury's

Sounded like a step by step for making a 'crossed bury' would be useful. This is a technique that allows you both to make shorter and stronger strops/gaskets.

There are various different ways to do it. This shows one way, which is optimized for around 6mm dyneema. But it shows the general approach which can be adapted to bigger.

Step one is to put a puller line thru were one of the bury's will be. I am making two identical strops at the same time. This shows the puller lines placed in each.

Next you pull the other loop/bury thru.

Note the fid stuck in the loop - keeps the loop open, while allowing you to pull to get even tension on covers

Re: Instructions for crossed bury's

Then, really the only 'trick' to the process. Put your wire puller inside the puller line.

The soft puller in this case allows you to get the wire puller thru without any chance of snaging fibers

so, sometimes it is better to use the soft puller to actually directly pull the 2nd bury thru. But I find in this size line it is better to use a wire puller.

Re: Instructions for crossed bury's

Now use the wire puller to pull the second bury thru

Re: Instructions for crossed bury's

Then I put a fid thru the second loop, and tension and even up the cross-over area.

Re: Instructions for crossed bury's

Now taper the two tails. The area where the two tails will cross is 4", so each taper will be an even 4" taper, which will mean the two tapers will nest to each other and you will end up with an even thickness exactly one strand width/strength.

Re: Instructions for crossed bury's

I then put one loop on low friction ring, and pin (with a sailmaker needle) the throat of the splice where I want it, so that it does not slip

Re: Instructions for crossed bury's

I then run very gentle light stitching thru the throats, to hold them during the process of fully milking the covers. This stitching can be removed at the end if you want a clean throat (but it is really not necessary so long as you have not pulled it tight).

Re: Instructions for crossed bury's

Then milk the covers down hard and suck the tails in, and load the whole strop up a bit and make everything nice and smooth.

And you can now lock stitch the bury's, and remove (if you want) the light throat stitch; and you are completed.

With a strop which is two even strands all the way around with no weak point.

Re: Instructions for crossed bury's

Nice instructions.

Even though I've searched, I have no idea what is that part.

Please explain.

Re: Instructions for crossed bury's

Thanks! What size and type of line are you using for the puller line?

Here it is 3mm amsteel. But what you are looking for is something which just fits your wire puller snuggly - that will depend a bit on what sort of wire puller you are using.
