Re: Is my roller furler bearing high enough?

Is to hig, if you drop the swivel you drop the pad eye as well or dont work...

But wait, if you add enough pennant in the bottom and keep the top swivel close to your pad eye could be fine..

If the angle in the picture is for the new sail, its fine.

Based on the picture you posted I would add a pendant ( top or bottom is up to you) To me it looks like the swivel needs to be further up the extrusion to get a better angle. generally (based on my furler instructions) you want the swivel to be within a few inches of the top of the extrusion. Right now it looks like your angle is too shallow.

You looked at the picture. Thanks. I'll add a few inches at the bottom.

Re: Is my roller furler bearing high enough?

I had no trouble opening the picture.

The angle is too shallow.

It might work fine at the dock, or in light winds, but in a big wind, you could get halyard wrap, and get yourself in trouble when you need it least. It happened to me. It was bad.

Once you have experienced halyard wrap, you will appreciate how awful it is. Your furler is jammed, the halyard and forestay are usually damaged. You can lose the mast.

I encourage you to add a penant at the tack.

I have experienced halyard wrap. That's why I have a new roller furler, forestay, and halyard restrained. All I wanted to know was if the angle was right.

Facnor suggest 15 degrees between the foil and the Halyard pad eye , Harken between 7 and 10 degrees,, Profurl between 5 and 10 degrees...

Re: Is my roller furler bearing high enough?

Ok, 6" of dyneema and a second wichard shackle so I can actually get my fingers on it and the bearing looks like this now.

Re: Is my roller furler bearing high enough?

No Cheechako, it isn't.

Take a look at www.sailboat-cruising.com/roller-reefing.html to see why and find out how to fix it.

Re: Is my roller furler bearing high enough?

Dear Cheechako,
I had a similar problem changing my headsail from a 155% Genoa to a 110% job in heavy winds. As others have noted, the hallyard wrapped exactly when trying to go in the marina in 25 knot winds, after the engine had died. So, fix it... raise the sail by at least 3-4 inches and test it at the dock a couple of times.

Looks great now! I was going to suggest you just use some sprectra cord, but looks like you've got it right now. remember you don't need a lot of halyard tension either with the luff fully supported by the groove, just enough to make the luff not wrinkle, no more!

Now ignore the rest of us and go for a sail and see how it goes!
