Is my roller furler bearing high enough?

I was told I HAD to have a pennant on my 80-85% jib because the bearing would be too low. Here's a picture of it, does it look like the angle of the furling line is wrong? I have some dyneema I can add to the bottom of the sail to raise it if it's necessary and it'll get it off my pulpit too.

I c ant open that pic. Photobucket is all but useless anymore. But you don't need a pic hosting service to post here BTW. A better free hosting service if you ever need one is Imgur.

Facnor? Harken? you can add few inches with a pennant but dont reach the extrusión tip end , leave some clearance so the line have a pulling angle , otherwise you can toast the bearing in short order...

Maybe this one will work for you. You do need a host to post with mobile since there is no picture option.

Re: Is my roller furler bearing high enough?

Neilpride, I'm asking because people insisted I have to raise it since I went from a 135 to an 80 headship. They insisted my bearing was going to be far too low because of this.

Re: Is my roller furler bearing high enough?

The main problem with the upper bearing being low is that it increases the possibility of wrapping the halyard around the foil. Sounds like adding a short Dyneema pennant would be a win-win.

Yup. If it does wrap, which will happen on a windy day (), you will be in a pickle. If you don't spot it and try to winch the furler line, you could twist the foil.

Just do it.

Mate you can swap a 135 %for a 80% if the luff is the same, i mean unless you are changing the luff dimensions the upper swivel is ok , you should keep the luff dimensión according to your furler...if i understand well your question??
Cheers....

It's not the size of the sail measured in percentage of fore triangle, it's simply a matter of the length of the luff. I'm assuming that the people you've spoken to are maintaining that you'll be susceptible to halyard wrap if your lead angle is too low. Technically, it should be @ 7 degrees or greater. But in my experience most halyard wrap is the result of inadequate halyard tension.

Personally, I think it looks fine in your picture. If anything, the angle is probably closer to 10-12 degrees. Just keep enough tension on the halyard when using the furler to keep it tight and you should be fine. You could certainly add a pennant to the bottom if that would solve another problem; just make sure that the swivel does not get too close to the top of the extrusion.

No, my luff is not necessarily the same. I bought a used sail and I took what they had.

I only told you I changed sizes so you would know why there's an issue, the luffs are NOT the same.

At least some finally looked at the angle...

Then you need probably a pad eye in the mast to avoid warp the Halyard...

Re: Is my roller furler bearing high enough?

Guys can someone please help me?
Once again I cannot access any link in a thread.
Always clicking on a link sends me to "skimlinks"

In this case I was trying to see the photograph linked in the opening message of the thread
