Re: Knot to attach float to mooring rope?

Thanks everyone,
I now think I have lots of good solutions and am finding my way around the ABOK in the package too!

Re: Knot to attach float to mooring rope?

I went with two Magnus hitches (ABOK#1736) with a stopper knot (fig ( where enough rope!) and cable tie on free ends, one either side of the float

Re: Knot to attach float to mooring rope?

Do not put an Alpine Butterfly knot in the middle of your anchor line! Knots weaken. Period. As mentioned a rolling hitch would work but I would check Ashley's or other through book on knots. Not damaging gear and being able to get things undone or move them would be foremost in my mind.

I assume this is to keep the rope part of your anchor rode off the bottom, not mark the anchor, and that you will want to do this periodically and in different depths of water. if it was me I would attach a loop of line or better to a clip. I would loop this around the rope part of the rode so that at low tide the rope rode would not drag on the bottom and clip the clip to the float. It might have to be looped through two or three times to not slip. Basically a rolling hitch. If it doesn't come loose easily cut the float line from the rode and deal with getting the knot undone at a more leisurely time. May take some experimenting to find a line size that doesn't slip along the rode and is also easy to undo.

Oh poop. I transposed mooring rope to anchor rode in my mind as I was reading replies and thinking about a solution.

You came up with a good solution for your mooring line.

Thanks, and in fact I think you were right, I guess I should have said swinging mooring rode?

Here is my full solution

The red buoys are to mark the rode when it will be closer to the surface at low water (around 2m deep - to seabed) (when the wind/current doesn't pull it straight)

Scubaseas has got it nailed i do it all the time just pass the thiner line over and under the lay of the thicker line a few times the more pull on the line the tighter it will get.
Time and tide wait for no man.

You may be looking for the "Constrictor" knot, or the "Double Constrictor". You may even add an extra twist & tuck to the end to make it truly a knot that must be cut, not untied. These are like a clove hitch on steroids. Good Luck.

Re: Knot to attach float to mooring rope?

I have done this many times just using double half hitches with a couple of round turns around the mooring line so I can snug the knot down and then I just tape off the tail end using electrical tape. But, you could also just whip the tail end or use a zip tie to the standing part. Simple, strong, works.

I'd rather not tie loops in the line as it is the right length already and I dont want to shorten it
I thought of splicing the thin lines in after comments here but then remembered that it would be good to be able to remove them

I will look at the various suggestions and use one of them

How do you navigate ABOK? The public domain version I downloaded doesnt have an index or table of contents

Thank you all very much
