Lewmar 25 2-Speed Winch ( Circa 1975 ) Dismantle ?

I am rebuilding a collection of old Lewmar winches and have managed to work out how to dismantle all except this old Ocean Series 25. I have searched the web and found others with the same question. The key question is how to remove the spindle from the center. In later winches there is a white key that slots in to the spindle to lock it but I can find no such device here. In the underside of the base (see picture) there is what appears to be a keyway but I know not what purpose it serves. I will ask Lewmar the exact same question and post the solution if I receive it. In the meantime I would appreciate any help as I feel a little bit

Thx

I just finished rebuilding 2 of these. I had the same question as you and could not find any info. so after looking at the winch for hours I finally figured it out. I took pics and was going to post how to do the rebuild but never got around to it.

Look at the center spindle where you pointed out the keyway. There is a snap ring that you need to remove (a big pain in the you know what) once you get that off there is a washer with a tab that fits into the key way. After you get these off the spindle pulls right off. You can also remove the lower gears by using a punch and hammer and pounding out the shaft, a few swift hits should do it. If I get time I will try and post a few pics for you. let me know if you need more explanation

Thank you so much

So I receievd your post, set to and the winch was dismantled in 10 minutes. You are right about the snap washer in the base, it is the same type as fitted to the top of the spindle on later Lewmar winches.
I have cleaned it all up and will take pictures and post later today.
I will also send the link to Tech Support at Lewmar

Thanks again and I hope this finds other troubled Lewmar winch owners.

Re: Lewmar 25 2-Speed Winch ( Circa 1975 ) Dismantle ?

I plan to service my Lewmar 25 winches tomorrow, or as soon as I can get them disassembled. Do I need to remove the winch from the deck to get to the key and snap ring? Thanks,
-bob

I think this resource shows the late 70's Lewmar winch service steps:

Lewmar Winch Schematics

This should help. Some parts available. I had my machine shop make a few unavailabel parts for my size 65's.

I have never seen a winch that can't be dressed down to the base and central post. You should not need to de-mount from the boat.

I took photos of all of mine as I disassembled and used them as re-assembly guides. Mine were all so old and such a mess that I removed the entire winch, disassembled totally and soaked in the tank where I work. Great pile of sand and salt in the bottom of the bucket after 10 hours in solvent.

Glad to hear you figured it out.

I had to take mine off to completely dismantle them. There are parts you can only get at from the underside of the winch. Hope that helps!

Re: Lewmar 25 2-Speed Winch ( Circa 1975 ) Dismantle ?

So more than 12 after the last post in this thread, I am faced with an issue I cannot seem to resolve, despite the very informative messages and pictures above. I hope someone is still available and in the mood to assist me on this one To be fair my winch is a Lewmar 25 single speed not two speed.

I came across a manual of a two speed winch here but it is slightly different to my winch https://www.ebay.com/itm/26514845320...p2047675.l2557

I have managed to remove what I believe is the rusted remnant of the snap ring but cannot see any evidence of a keyed washer. However, there seems to be a flange beneath the centre spindle, which makes no sense as the shaft cannot come out from either side. I tried to upload pics but don't seem to know how to do that as the system asks for an http location. Please explain how this works.

Basically I need advise on how to remove the shaft when either ends seem wider than the hole they need to pass through.

Thanks.

I doubt if it's a flange -- it's almost surely a washer. If it's rusted I would suggest some gentle use of a hydraulic press to get it apart. Most automotive shops and some parts places will do it for you.

Re: Lewmar 25 2-Speed Winch ( Circa 1975 ) Dismantle ?

Hi Jammer.

On closer inspection, what I thought was a washer is actually the bottom of the shaft. Somehow, after removing the rusted snap ring or keyed washer (cant make out which it may have been nor whether there is part of it still embedded in the grove) the part of the shaft above the grove is still hitting the base, preventing its extraction. The shaft turns easily in the base and even slides up an down by the amount of space of the removed ring/washer but wont come out. Should I use a press to get it out??

By the way, the snap ring in the picture is the outer one that was on the outside of the drum around the shaft. The rusted ring is the only thing I could see at the bottom of the shaft.

I can't tell from the photos. If there's a flange that's actually larger than the hole then a press is just going to break stuff. Maybe it comes out the other way, but the photo on the ebay listing shows it coming out the top. How badly do you need to get it apart?
