Lewmar/40/Two Speed Question

I sail an old 65 ft yawl. (Built in 1938) It has a mast mounted Lewmar/40/Two Speed halyard wench (not a self-tailing) and the drum cross-hatch has worn down that there is almost no more "bite/grip" when raising the main sail. Is there a way to refurbish the drum cross-hatch to revitalize the "bite/grip" of this old wench? The wench itself works perfectly. New wenches are EXPENSIVE! Any idea's?

It is a WINCH, not a WENCH. WENCHES are way more expensive that WINCHES.

To answer your question. Take it to a machine shop and have them go over it with a knurling tool. Then get it re-plated or re-anodized. This process will not be cheap either.

Or buy a less worn used winch. Try Bacon's in Annapolis. They specialize in used winches.

What material is the drum? Al or bronze or plated bronze? Makes a big difference!
