Lewmar 48 Re-assembly

I just took apart a Lewmar 48 to clean and service it. I cannot get the drum back on the shaft! It stops when it meets the first set of gears and after 1.5 hours, I gave up. What am I missing here?

Re: Lewmar 48 Re-assembly

Did you download the service instructions from Lewmar? Maybe you put the internal gears in the wrong holes, if that's even possible. They're pretty simple to work on ... with the instructions.

Re: Lewmar 48 Re-assembly

Like you said, they are pretty simple and can only go back together one way. Why can I not get the drum to slide over the gears?

Re: Lewmar 48 Re-assembly

Put a winch handle in it. Does it work properly without the drum? It's a 3-speed self-tail, right? Put the drum on and turn with winch handle (or something).

Like I said above, the 3-speed has multiple small gears which maybe can get mixed up and then prevent the drum from fitting. ???

Re: Lewmar 48 Re-assembly

I think from your description you have the same problem I had with the same model.

There are two gears at the bottom of the base base off to one side that have to fit under the drum. One gear just over and slightly offset from the other. 2-3" diameter as I recall.

These two gears look the same but they are not. They will both fit either shaft and will mesh even when installed in the wrong spot. Swap out these two gears and see if the drum drops all the way.

Re: Lewmar 48 Re-assembly

When I took it apart to clean it, there are two gear columns, I kept them seperate so that no mix up could occur. When I could not seat the drum, I tried to re-arrange the gears but not possible.

Re: Lewmar 48 Re-assembly

I downloaded the instructions and followed them to the tee. Drum still does not slide over the top gear!
