Lewmar Electric Winch Service

I need help... how do you get the lower gears out of a Lewmar electric winch? The only information on the Lewmar website is for manual winches, but those are not a problem.

I have not serviced the lower gears the past 4 years becasue I could not figure how to get it apart without removing the entire motor assembly, but since it was working fine I just ignored it. Now when I crank in the high gear direction the handle makes a couple of complete revolutions before it start to turn the winch.

Thank you for any help or suggestions.

We are currently at the island/country of Niue in the South Pacific, so there are no yacht services available to ask.

Thanks,

Jim

Since An electric winch is basically a self-tailing winch, with a motor, you might try disassembling from above, as normal for manual winches.

The large gears come out easily, just like the manual model. But the smaller gears have the shaft coming up from the motor and (at least so far) I con't figure out how to remove them.

Re: Lewmar Electric Winch Service

I have just serviced my winches , 2 are normal lewmar self tailing which disassembled easily. The other 2 are larger self tailing electric winches.
I also had trouble removing the 2 smaller gears so left them in situe and just cleanse and regressed as well as possible. The other problem I have on one of the electric winches is that the central stem will not come out . I have tried to force it up but it just won’t budge. Any ideas ?
