Luff tape replacement cost & method

What is approx cost to replace a luff wire and how tough?

Just bought a new to me genoa. The sail looks fine but, despite our best efforts to communicate, the luff wire is to big.

The existing luff looks fine. Can a sailmaker just add a new luff tape, sewing it to the existing tape, so that it extends beyond the existing luff 1/4"? As a complete novice that seems doable.

Or is it mandatory for the old tape to come out?

The luff is 47'.

Re: Luff tape replacement cost & method

Slightly different but we had a 35ft Genoa converted from hanks to luff for £90 ($120) including a wash.

Lovely sail which came from e bay and probably only been used a couple of times so worth us converting and keeping as a spare.
