Main will not hold a reef

The main sail will not hold a reef or stay furled when a cross wind applies a force. Proper operation requires the clutch to be in the Free position with the sail locked in place by the motor break until a command is sent via the electric switches.

Less than two years ago the motor break had to be replaced in my then new mast. I have the Selden electric in-mast furling system. It has worked well other than this problem.

I am able to engage what I assume is the clutch by placing the system in Ratchet rather then from in the Free position. This action allows me furl the sail using the switches but will not allow the system to u furl.

Any suggestions? Seems like replacing a motor break every 18 months is a bad idea.

Re: Main will not hold a reef

Most appreciated. There is very little on what to do when the main unfurls unexpectedly. Lots of post on how to get your main unstuck. Has to be a motor brake that is failing for some reason. In my case, just happened out of the blue after holding a reef for 11 + hours in a 24 knot breeze.
