Mast Stuck in the Step ??

I had my masts lifted on Monday in preparation for my re-rig, but the main was so well corroded to the mast step I finished up sawing the mast off at deck level, see http://www.schooner-britannia.com/rerigging.html
If anyone has experienced this problem and how to break the corrosion at a mast step I really would like to hear from them.
