Mast Transport Spain to UK

I would like to transport a 33m carbon fibre mast from Spain to the UK. What is the best way to do that - would I cut the mast into 12m sections and transport in a container and reassemble ?

Rent/buy a mast trailer.

Like Atolls' reply...air freight it. You dont need an Antonov but a good freight forwarder can find a 747f nose loader that it can move on. You will pay by the kilo and a surcharge because it is not traditional freight. It will be loaded down the inside of the fuselage and tied down there. Used to do this stuff as a loadmaster on DC8-64 freighters in the 1980-90 era. Actually arranged a 125 ton locomotive on an Antonov from London Ontario to Shannon Ireland using Air Foyle based in he UK, not sure if they are still in business but they did represent the Anatanov Design Bureau 15 years ago. Good luck with the project....money can move anything!

I had a 112' mast transported fro Houston to Hong Kong sitting on top of some containers by ship. Easy and cheap -well compared with air freight anyway.😃

While a plane could certainly handle it, you'd have to get the mast to the airport in Spain and from the airport to the boat in England. Roads around airports are not good for stuff that long, and handling isn't always delicate. We accepted a Hobie 16 at JFK for shipment once and the guys in Nairobi managed to run over the mast with their forklift. Is the mast at the manufacturer's location somewhere in the middle of Spain, or (hopefully) at a Spanish port? It should be possible to find a ferry or other ship to carry it and maybe even arrange for it to dock in the port where you need it in England.

Might be cheaper and easier to build a new one in the UK

Re: Mast Transport Spain to UK

If its carbon and floats would it not be easier to get it to calais and tow it accross behind a boat lol.... I wonder if you could tie it onto the back of the ferry..?
If youre in Brighton youre probably better off taking the boat accross to France under engine somewhere and then trucking the mast up from Spain..
I had a mast built in The Netherlands and trucked to the Uk and was getting quotes of 4000 gbp. Ended up with a guy from Sth hampton and a mast trailor the mast was 16 mtrs long though. That cost me 1800 gbp..

Youd pay 60 grand for a carbon mast that long.

Re: Mast Transport Spain to UK

Thanks everyone for your helpful replies. Maximum vehicle length on european roads is mostly 20m so road transport is out of the question. On a ship seems to be the best option or stick with the original plan of taking the boat to the masts.

I have a 12m jury rig mast on at the moment so I am in the market for old sails for the trip.

Re: Mast Transport Spain to UK

Definitely easier to take the boat to the mast.

We just shipped an 18m mast from the UK to Portugal - cost was around £2600 and even then the dipsh*t driver managed to lose a whole host of bits along the way.

Good luck with it
