In general, stainless steel load bearing parts are a bad idea for long term immersion in saltwater, like mooring chains and shackles.

Crevice corrosion of stainless absolutely is "a thing" that happens in chloride solutions. Unlike corrosion on galvanized parts, it is almost impossible to detect by visual inspection... until after the part fails.

Re: Mousing mooring shacles

I am a fan of mousing rather than just using anerobic glue, but for a mooring shackle I would use both. So mouse and use Locktite red.

The other option is penning or even welding (the latter not with a high strength or galvanised shackle).

These options are assuming the shackle would be cut when replacement was needed, although Locktite red can be loosened with heat.

Re: Mousing mooring shacles

Consider using bolt type anchor shackles.

Almost foolproof... Uses a nut and cotter pin instead of mousing wire, and a bit easier to deal with underwater.

Cheers! Bill

Last I checked my chainplates are not constantly immersed in salt water...

...but if I was building my own boat, my chainplates would most certainly be bronze, and my grandchildren would be the first ones even thinking about replacing them.
